About the
Choir
Around the
year 1050 BC, the Israelite army drew up for battle against
a much bigger, much tougher, more brutal army called the
Philistines. The men of Israel were sweating up a flood
because they knew they would all either be slain or be made
slaves to serve in the grain-fields of Philistia.
Then there suddenly appeared a short, lanky kid whose
forehead only reached the chests of most of the Israelite
soldiers; and he walked straight up to king Saul and told
him that he was sure that God would deliver His people from
an army of bulldogs, including the head bully, Goliath.
After David’s stunning defeat of the giant and Israel's
subsequent victory over the Philistines, the shepherd boy’s
fame took off like a rocket. He would eventually became king
and feared by all the nations around him for the might of
his kingdom. But there was one aspect of his personal life
which most of his friends didn’t realize and none of his
enemies would have dreamed of – his love for psalmody.
Fast-forward about 3000 years to modern America in a
church called St Mary’s of Pompano Beach, Florida, and you
will find a small band of deacons who don’t quite have King
David’s fame or “ruddy good looks” (1 Sam 16:12) but who
share his love of psalmody. That’s who we are! We feel we
are very much like the ancient king in a few ways – we
desire to serve God, we care about His people, and we care
about the music of His house.
We have but one basic
goal in learning hymns: to enter deeper into the church’s
life and worship and so enrich our relationship with God
(and with each other) which is done uniquely by hymnological
expression.
